Gilligan served in the United States Navy with the Skipper and saved him from being killed by a runaway depth charge. Upon retirement, the Skipper used his savings to buy the Minnow, and hired Gilligan as his first mate. Gilligan and the Skipper welcomed five passengers on the Minnow for a three-hour sightseeing tour, but got caught in a storm and ended up stranded on an uncharted tropical island. This became the setting for one of the most popular sitcoms of all time.
